Golder Associates is now offering a great opportunity for a Junior Environmental Scientist to join our growing Detroit team. In this role you will have the opportunity to support a variety of clients and projects. Under the direction of seasoned professionals, your duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Leading and conducting asbestos, mold, and hazardous materials assessments including sample collection and reporting;

  • Indoor air quality investigations;

  • Industrial hygiene sampling for chemical and/or biological hazards;

  • Observation of abatement and/or remediation remedial contractors;

  • Preparing and calibrating sampling equipment for field use;

  • Health and safety site audits;

  • Maintaining excellent field notes, including filing and management of all project related field notes including some data entry and assistance with report preparation;

  • Identifying potential and existing site hazards. Preparing and adhering to site-specific health and safety plans to mitigate or eliminate risks to Golder's clients, employees and the public;

  • Reporting all health and safety concerns, incidents and near miss events and participating in all office-lead health and safety initiatives;

  • Reporting of sample results and field observations;

  • Maintaining a high standard of behavior to uphold Golder’s reputation and demonstrating a commitment to our Core Values;

  • Participating in a team environment; and,

  • Perform any other duties, including miscellaneous office related tasks, as required

Job Requirements:

  • A bachelor level undergraduate degree in a related or allied field such as Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science, or Environmental Engineering.

  • Certified as an Asbestos Inspector in Michigan or the ability to obtain this certification immediately upon hire.

  • Two years + of related experience desirable.

Desirable Skills: Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Knowledge of HMIS, OSHA health & safety legislation and best practices, awareness of health and safety issues and a safety conscious attitude;

  • Outstanding ability to problem solve and think critically, mechanical aptitude a plus;

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with particular attention to detail and accuracy of field notes;

  • Strong people skills and an ability to lead and work in a team environment;

  • Previous experience with hazardous materials, industrial hygiene, health and safety, EHS compliance, radiation and/or ergonomics;

  • Working towards professional certification in an EHS related field, or future eligibility for certification, is an asset;

  • Regional travel (US and Canada) may be required;

  • The ability to bend, lift and carry field equipment, up to 50 lbs.;

  • Have a valid driver’s license; and,

  • Flexibility to work extra hours and the ability to travel and work in unpredictable/varied conditions;

  • A positive and enthusiastic attitude, willingness to learn and the ability to work with little supervision.
