Golder has a new opportunity for an intermediate level Water Resources Engineer to support our engineering and environmental projects in our Atlanta, Georgia office.
In this role, you will provide water resources support to a range of projects under the supervision of senior staff. You will have the opportunity to work alongside consultants from various disciplines on exciting and challenging projects locally and around the world, primarily in the mining and power sectors but also the manufacturing, oil & gas, and land development sectors according to business needs. This role requires demonstrated experience and expertise in surface water management, and civil engineering, and the ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams covering groundwater studies, water quality assessments, water treatment design, environmental and geotechnical assessments.
This full-time position will suit someone with strong technical, analytical and modelling skills and an interest in applying scientific and engineering principles to a wide range of environmental and engineering projects.
Responsibilities of the role will include:
Participating in a wide range of engineering and mining projects, from conceptual water management planning, to detailed design of water infrastructure and construction oversight;
Support the water resources engineering efforts, including environmental assessments, environmental permitting and engineering design projects by:
Conducting climatic, hydrological and hydraulic assessments, including fieldwork, data management, data analysis, and modelling;
Developing water management plans and completing conceptual design of water management infrastructure;
Developing erosion and sediment control plans and completing engineering design of the hydraulic infrastructure;
Completing water balance modelling to assess water management alternatives and to estimate water taking, treatment, storage and discharge volumes;
Preparing prefeasibility, feasibility and detailed designs of water management infrastructure (e.g. open channels, sewers, culverts, spillways, energy dissipators, holding and settling ponds, pumping systems) including capital and operating cost estimates;
Completing dilution and assimilative capacity assessments of surface water receivers of mine effluent.
Conducting flood risk assessments, urban drainage design for land development projects;
Conducting water resources engineering designs for stream restoration projects;
Preparing design drawings, technical reports, regulatory permit documents, tender documents and technical specification;
Undertaking project-based travel and site work, both within the USA and internationally. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client needs;
Providing technical oversight/management of water resources projects or water resources in large multi-disciplinary projects including work breakdown, providing direction to junior consulting and technical staff, and making decisions with input from senior staff. Acts as the main communication link between senior and junior staff;
Lead report preparation, able to prepare or direct completion of technical documents including descriptions of investigations, results, conclusions and recommendations for review by senior staff;
Participating in Business Development (BD) activities including preparing or providing input to proposals, participating in trade shows and conferences;
Displaying a ‘safety first’ attitude, promoting positive health and safety, raising safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhering to Company health and safety policy and procedures.
Degree in Civil Engineering or similar, with experience in water resources management and assessments related to hydrology, hydraulic structures, erosion and sediment control, stream restoration, closure landform design and detailed design of water control and conveyance facilities. A Master’s in Science is preferable.
5 - 10 years of demonstrable experience conducting hydrologic and hydraulic assessments and design of water management infrastructure. Prior experience within the mining sector will be an asset.
Professional Engineering registration (PE) is preferred or the ability to obtain it within a year.
Proficient with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software (e.g. HEC-HMS, EPA or PC SWMM, HEC-RAS and/or ICPR), AutoCAD and ArcGIS software. A working knowledge of GoldSim Monte Carlo Simulation software will be advantageous.
Working knowledge of SEDCAD sediment control design software and EARTHWORKS is highly advisable.
Ability to work independently and make decisions with input and review from senior staff;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (in English) with experience writing technical reports and project proposals.
Strong organizational skills with project management capabilities.
Confident in managing professional relationships including liaison with clients.
