We currently have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Technical Director to join our team based out of Edinburgh with a primary focus of identifying and developing new business opportunities within our core service areas within ground engineering and site characterisation/remediation within Scotland and the North of England. This will not only include identifying new client and project opportunities but also supporting the development of our existing regional key client relationships. Although initially, the role will be business development focused, it is expected that the role will evolve into a balanced mix of business development and project delivery such that it is essential that the Technical Director provides technical leadership, mentoring, developing graduate and intermediate individuals and providing project direction. Target sectors will include infrastructure, power, manufacturing, water resources, and oil and gas.

Key Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working collaboratively with Business Unit Leaders in Ground Engineering and Environmental Services, as well as Business Development Leaders in other Regions/Sectors, to implement and deliver the business growth strategy for Scotland and the North of England, inclusive of identifying and securing new business opportunities with strategic growth areas including infrastructure, power, manufacturing, water resources and oil and gas

  • Supporting Regional Business Development opportunities in EIA, in collaboration with other Senior EIA Practitioners in the UK & Ireland Business;

  • Leading projects as the Project Manager or Project Director on multidisciplinary teams. This may include acting as a liaison between Golder technical teams and client teams, development of work plans or proposals, review and approval of design reports, technical specifications, drawings, and tender packages for ground engineering or site characterisation related projects. Present designs and findings to clients and Review Boards and act as a liaison between Golder technical teams and client teams/regulators

  • Leadership of project teams ensuring successful delivery of technical excellence and projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and to client and Golder’s standards

  • Supporting business development activities that will be aligned with our UK, European and Global Strategies, advise and support the professional development of staff to meet the future needs of the Company. As a key Senior in the Edinburgh Office, support and encourage the technical development of the team to meet CPD and chartership objectives and be recognized as a mentor and role model, offering motivation and encouragement to team members

  • Promote technical growth by representing Golder at conferences, participating in technical bodies and communities, writing papers and encouraging university liaison

  • Encourage, promote, and facilitate the effective sharing/coordination of resources amongst regional and global teams to maximize productivity and allow for skill development and succession planning

  • Project based travel primarily within the UK but also, occasionally internationally, dependent on project and client needs

  • Display a ‘safety first’ attitude in line with an interdependent health and safety culture, promote positive health and safety, raise safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhere to Golder’s health and safety policy and procedures

  • BSc or BEng in Geology, Civil Engineering or Environmental Science or similar. Qualified to MSc Level within Geotechnical Engineering or Environmental Science

  • Registered Chartered Engineer/Geologist/Scientist or Member of a related professional body

  • Extensive experience providing geotechnical and/or environmental detailed design

  • Proven work winner with an ability to write technically and commercially sound proposals

  • Strong leadership, delegation, mentoring and influencing skills

  • Commercial understanding of consultancy

  • Strong project and financial management skills

  • Ability to liaise with clients and effectively develop relationships

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Ability to work independently, display initiative and decision-making skills

  • Demonstrable experience in supporting EIA projects would be advantageous
