  • Interpreting the more complex contracts will require judgement. The Project Accountant should understand when to ask for assistance and whom to ask (a senior colleague, supervisor, contract specialist).

  • Project Managers often are less concerned with the billing requirements of the client than the technical aspects of the project, but also can be over-protective of the client relationship; the Project Accountant will need to be persistent in obtaining sufficient information to bill the client properly. Failure to meet the client’s billing requirements can result in payment delays and higher DSO.

  • Project Managers can feel pressure to deliver what the client wants even when proper client authorization for work has not been completed. The Project Accountant will need to be assertive in only adjusting project budgets once proper documentation has been obtained, in accordance with Golder policy.

  • Project Managers often feel pressure to demonstrate good project financial performance and may provide direction to the Project Accountant to bend Golder policies (whether written or informal). The Project Accountant will need to be well-versed in the company’s policies and confident in their application, knowing when to escalate issues to their Supervisor for a second opinion.

  • Not all Project Managers fully understand accounting practices and project financial reports. The Project Accountant will need to be patient and professional in supporting Project Managers who are struggling to understand their financial reports, and who might tend to view the reports as being “wrong” or inaccurate.
