Golder has a new opportunity for a Laboratory Technician to join our Construction and Materials Engineering Services team on a full-time basis based in Ottawa, Ontario .

The successful candidate will work closely with other team members, as well as with Geotechnical and Environmental Consultants.

An overview of your role will include:

  • Carrying out Quality Control and Quality Assurance laboratory tests on concrete, aggregates, and other construction materials according to various standard procedures (e.g. ASTM, MTO, CSA);

  • Carrying out laboratory tests on soil samples according to various standard procedures, as part of geotechnical investigations;

  • Entering test data and producing test reports;

  • Logging, handling, storing and disposing of samples. Please note that concrete, aggregate, soil and rock samples can weigh up to 30 kg. The successful candidate must be comfortable handling this weight.

  • Cleaning, maintenance, repair, and calibration of laboratory testing equipment;

  • Assisting with ordering and re-supply of laboratory and field supplies;

  • Shipping and receiving of samples, supplies and equipment;

  • Proper care, handling, and storage of various chemical products used in laboratory testing; and

  • Interacting with staff in the Ottawa office including field technicians and technologists, administrative and professional staff, as well as with some clients.

You will have to possess the following qualifications:

  • High School Diploma is a minimum requirement, depending on relevant experience. Technician or Technology Diploma in civil, geotechnical or geological engineering is preferred;

  • Previous education, training or experience with the various ASTM, MTO and CSA test methods and protocols for soil, aggregates and Portland cement concrete would be an asset;

  • Ability to learn, comprehend, and to accurately and conscientiously perform standard test procedures, and to obtain the various associated certifications;

  • Good mathematical and computer skills.

  • Safety oriented attitude; first aid and WHMIS training an asset;

  • Good time management skills;

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • Flexible attitude with the ability to work overtime and/or weekends as required; and

  • Ability to work in a team environment.
