Golder is seeking a Civil/ Geotechnical Engineer to join our Sacramento, California office to support a team delivering civil, geotechnical, and geological engineering projects. In this mid-level role, you will have the opportunity to manage and perform geotechnical evaluations and calculations, write technical documents, conduct subsurface investigations, and provide field monitoring, testing, and sampling for a variety of projects. From this location, we support clients in mining, aggregates, solid waste, and infrastructure sectors.
Responsibilities of the role will include:
Scope, budget, execute, monitor, and interpret subsurface exploration programs, with direction and support from senior staff
Support and manage projects, with an emphasis on geotechnical engineering, design, and monitoring
Work outdoors in all seasonal weather conditions
Travel for out-of-town project opportunities
Handle equipment, including operation, calibration, and maintenance, in accordance with regulatory requirements; and ability to lift and move approximately 50 pounds without assistance
Monitor and log test boring explorations including visual identification and classification of soil and rock materials, and preparation of boring logs using multiple logging software programs
Install and monitor geotechnical instrumentation systems such as monitoring wells, vibrating wire piezometers, and inclinometers with support from senior staff
Perform construction quality assurance testing and observations for earthworks construction
Assign, review and interpret the results from geotechnical laboratory testing programs
Perform geotechnical calculations and analyses involving interpretation of subsurface conditions, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, foundation engineering, and slope stabilization
Perform geotechnical analyses with computer models for slope/embankment stability and foundation/embankment settlement estimates
Assist with writing technical reports, design memoranda, field reports, cost estimating, specifications, and permit documents with senior technical advice and review
Develop geotechnical recommendation for final designs with senior review
Prepare geotechnical data reports, and report quality calculation packages
Ability to work with a team or with minimal supervision, and with contractors and cross-discipline in-house designers
Safely perform work, both in the field and office, and operating vehicles on behalf of the company
Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering
Academic or professional training in soil/rock mechanics and foundation engineering.
Minimum of two years of professional experience in the civil or geotechnical engineering fields
Experience with field logging and sampling, slope stability, settlement, general civil design, and other geotechnical analyses
Enthusiasm for field work and travel as needed for project and other needs
Willingness to work on projects across business sectors, performing a variety of tasks, sometimes on short notice
Proficiency with industry-standard commercial computer software, including Microsoft Office
Proficiency with computer modelling software for slope/embankment stability and foundation/embankment settlement (i.e., SLIDE, Geostudios)
Focused organization and time management abilities, with strong attention to detail
Understanding the importance of health & safety as a top priority and an enthusiasm to participate in Golder’s associated programs
Strong verbal communication, writing, analytical, and organizational skills combined with a positive attitude and an ability to work both independently and within groups, including with contractors and cross-discipline in-house designers
Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering
PE registration, or ability to obtain within two years
At least three years of consulting experience in civil/geotechnical engineering
Experience performing earthworks construction quality assurance testing
Experience and proficiency with AutoCAD and ArcGIS
40-hour HAZWOPER and/or MSHA surface miner training
Ability to prepare proposals and cost estimates
Ability to prepare documents, and review those prepared by junior staff, including engineering drawings, specifications, work plans, calculations, and cost estimates
