Golder Associates Civil/Geotechnical Engineer in ROSEVILLE, California

Golder is seeking a Civil/ Geotechnical Engineer to join our Sacramento, California office to support a team delivering civil, geotechnical, and geological engineering projects. In this mid-level role, you will have the opportunity to manage and perform geotechnical evaluations and calculations, write technical documents, conduct subsurface investigations, and provide field monitoring, testing, and sampling for a variety of projects. From this location, we support clients in mining, aggregates, solid waste, and infrastructure sectors.

Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Scope, budget, execute, monitor, and interpret subsurface exploration programs, with direction and support from senior staff

  • Support and manage projects, with an emphasis on geotechnical engineering, design, and monitoring

  • Work outdoors in all seasonal weather conditions

  • Travel for out-of-town project opportunities

  • Handle equipment, including operation, calibration, and maintenance, in accordance with regulatory requirements; and ability to lift and move approximately 50 pounds without assistance

  • Monitor and log test boring explorations including visual identification and classification of soil and rock materials, and preparation of boring logs using multiple logging software programs

  • Install and monitor geotechnical instrumentation systems such as monitoring wells, vibrating wire piezometers, and inclinometers with support from senior staff

  • Perform construction quality assurance testing and observations for earthworks construction

  • Assign, review and interpret the results from geotechnical laboratory testing programs

  • Perform geotechnical calculations and analyses involving interpretation of subsurface conditions, soil mechanics, rock mechanics, foundation engineering, and slope stabilization

  • Perform geotechnical analyses with computer models for slope/embankment stability and foundation/embankment settlement estimates

  • Assist with writing technical reports, design memoranda, field reports, cost estimating, specifications, and permit documents with senior technical advice and review

  • Develop geotechnical recommendation for final designs with senior review

  • Prepare geotechnical data reports, and report quality calculation packages

  • Ability to work with a team or with minimal supervision, and with contractors and cross-discipline in-house designers

  • Safely perform work, both in the field and office, and operating vehicles on behalf of the company


  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering

  • Academic or professional training in soil/rock mechanics and foundation engineering.

  • FE/EIT registration

  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in the civil or geotechnical engineering fields

  • Experience with field logging and sampling, slope stability, settlement, general civil design, and other geotechnical analyses

  • Enthusiasm for field work and travel as needed for project and other needs

  • Willingness to work on projects across business sectors, performing a variety of tasks, sometimes on short notice

  • Proficiency with industry-standard commercial computer software, including Microsoft Office

  • Proficiency with computer modelling software for slope/embankment stability and foundation/embankment settlement (i.e., SLIDE, Geostudios)

  • Focused organization and time management abilities, with strong attention to detail

  • Understanding the importance of health & safety as a top priority and an enthusiasm to participate in Golder’s associated programs

  • Strong verbal communication, writing, analytical, and organizational skills combined with a positive attitude and an ability to work both independently and within groups, including with contractors and cross-discipline in-house designers


  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering

  • PE registration, or ability to obtain within two years

  • At least three years of consulting experience in civil/geotechnical engineering

  • Experience performing earthworks construction quality assurance testing

  • Experience and proficiency with AutoCAD and ArcGIS

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER and/or MSHA surface miner training

  • Ability to prepare proposals and cost estimates

  • Ability to prepare documents, and review those prepared by junior staff, including engineering drawings, specifications, work plans, calculations, and cost estimates
