Golder Associates Archaeology Field Assistant in THUNDER BAY, Ontario

Golder has a new opportunity for Archaeology Field Assistants to join our Environmental permitting and monitoring team on a contract basis based in Thunder Bay . In partnership with Wataynikaneyap Power LP, we are looking to hire field team members to work alongside Golder Archaeologists in crews of four. The Field Team Members will aid in the assessment of areas identified as having archaeological potential (Stage 3 assessment).

Location and Schedule:

Work will require travelling by mostly charter plane and boat. Half day training and onboarding session will be provided prior to the commencement of the field program where the Field Team Members will complete Golder health and safety training, and training on the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport’s standards for completing archaeological assessments in Ontario. Travel and overnight accommodation (if required) for the field team, including the Archaeology Field Team Member, will be arranged by Golder for both the on-boarding session and the field program.

The field program will be focused to the Wataynikaneyap Phase 2 project area ( Work is anticipated to begin October 9 and is expected to last for 3 and 5 days spread, depending on the Stage 3 location. Workdays will be approximately 10 – 12 hours (including travel) with the aim of working 7 days per week, with an understanding that there will be weather delays. Additional work may be identified at a later date.

Your role will include:

  • Excavating 1 metre squareunits down to subsoil or bedrock (approximately 25 cm) by shovel and trowel

  • Screening back dirt from eachtest pit and inspecting for artifacts

  • Hiking with shovel and screenfrom the boat drop off points to the study sites, with theGolder archaeologist

  • Working in rain or all weathersuitable for boat travel

  • Being involved in Health andSafety tailgate meetings and discussions

You will have a background in:

  • Being able to spend a coupleof hours on a boat

  • Being able to hike acrossrough terrain carrying basic gear

  • Being able to shovel andscreen for an entire day

  • Having an interest inarchaeology

  • Having a good attitude forHealth and Safety

  • Having good communicationskills

  • Being able to stay with theteam for the full duration of the field program

  • Indigenouslanguage skills (Ojibway and/or Oji-Cree) are considered an asset.

You will need:

  • CSA-approved steel toed rubberboots or work boots

  • Clothing suitable for outdoorwork in all weather conditions (including cool spring weather)

Salary and Hours:

All field work will require up to 12-hour work days including travel, and include up to 7 days per week of continuous work. Rate will be $20/hour. Time and expenses for travel to meet the team at a pre‑determined location, accommodation and food during the study will be provided, if staying away from home.
