Golder has a new opportunity for a “Senior Social Scientist” to join our team in LATAM, on a full time contract.

Job Responsibilities

Participate in and lead proposal preparation, work plan development, and project delivery of social impact assessments, social management planning, stakeholder engagement, social auditing, and monitoring projects across Central and South America and the Caribbean. Primary focus will be on capturing and delivering projects and/or sub-projects for International Financing Institutions. Secondary focus will be on expansion of services to existing customers and in markets relating to Golder’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment business. Existing customers work in the O&G, Mining, infrastructure and Power Sectors. Additional responsibilities include participation in water resource, climate change, and environmental projects

Job Requirements

  • Proven knowledge and experience in socio-economic assessment, sustainable project development, stakeholder engagement, and social management plans, with minimum of 10 years’ experience

  • Technical expertise on one or more of the following areas: in-migration assessment, economic impact assessment, sustainable livelihoods assessment, health impact assessment, land and resource use assessments, human rights assessments, resettlement planning, Indigenous Peoples Plans, or other social impact/risk assessment and management planning areas.

  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement with a focus on indigenous peoples and vulnerable groups during project development/design and implementation, Demonstrated understanding of the application of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles

  • Experience conducting social due diligence and compliance audits for major projects

  • Experience applying social auditing frameworks (e.g. SA8000 Social Accountability), IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles, Social Responsibility ISO26000, and other internationally recognized social sustainability and performance standards and guidelines

  • Work experience with IFI’s (including the Inter-American Development Bank, , World Bank, International Finance Corporation, CIFI) is essential, as is knowledge of their policies and procedures in Latin America and/or the Caribbean.

  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders across a wide range of disciplines and office locations

  • Demonstrated experience managing single projects and/or multiple projects with budgets more than $100,000 USD

  • Proven ability to work seamlessly with financial institutions, regulators, senior client representatives, multiple internal offices, and sub-contractors

  • Must be available to reside in Latin America and/or the Caribbean; available for business travel

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex schedules

  • Periodically assume the role of team leader and supervise the work of team members

  • Strong analytical, writing, communication and advocacy skills

  • IT literacy, familiarity with e-presentation techniques and ability to operate with on-line web-based applications

Educational Requirements

  • Minimum of a master’s degree in a social science field (e.g. economics, anthropology, sociology) or environmental sciences

  • Relevant professional certification such as IAP2, SA8000 Social Auditor or other social certifications an asset

Language Requirements

  • Excellent knowledge of the English and Spanish language, with exceptional writing, presentation and communication skills

  • Proficiency in other languages is an asset
