Golder Associates Principal Tailings Closure Specialist in West Perth, Australia

Golder has a new full-time opportunity within our Global Mining team for a Principal Tailings Closure Specialist, based in Perth (preferably but not essential). Golder is looking to strengthen its closure and tailings capacity by building a specialized team focused on the delivery of complex projects involving closure of TSFs for various commodities and mining companies. A key focus of this specialized team is to identify and design innovative closure solutions intended to set TSFs into a trajectory where operational failure modes can be progressively demonstrated to become non-credible.

The primary goal is to provide our clients with closure design solutions that reduce the likelihood and consequence of failure in the long term with the ultimate aspiration of converting TSFs into landforms that provide a safe environment that enables the development of alternative post-mining land uses. Senior professionals within this team are expected to fulfill the requirements to take on the role of Engineer of Record and become a trusted advisor to our clients in the process of meeting their objectives throughout the closure and post-closure phases.

This is a principal level, leadership position focused on building a new area of specialization within a thriving closure and tailings business. You will have a track record in delivering tailings and mine waste consulting services to the mining sector. This will include the identification of projects and providing cost effective, practical and technically defensible solutions to clients. It is essential to have an excellent understanding of current industry standards and guidelines associated to tailings management and closure.

You will be required to identify key specialists in technical disciplines that support the delivery of tailings closure studies, and work with them to deliver projects, depending upon client requirements and project scopes. The role will provide you with the opportunity to work in a supportive local team that is linked well with Golder’s regional and global technical communities for closure, tailings and other related disciplines. You will be able to participate in diverse and rewarding projects with a range of like-minded professionals in many disciplines.

Key duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Technical directing of tailings closure design studies and related analyses including delivering best practice consulting services to clients in Australia and overseas;

  • Providing recommendations to clients in the area of tailings and mine waste management for closure while maintaining effective client relationships to generate consulting business;

  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring for staff in the regional team and reviewing their project work;

  • Providing senior technical input to project teams and ensuring that appropriate technical standards are developed and maintained;

  • Leadership of multi-disciplinary project teams on local, regional, and international consulting assignments;

  • Project management, budgeting, and quality control for closure of tailings, mine waste, heap leach facilities and similar assignments;

  • Technical direction of tailings closure design studies and related analyses;

  • Liaising with specialists from the Mine Waste Group and other disciplines or offices within Golder;

  • Delivering best practice consulting services to clients in Australia and overseas;

  • Providing recommendations to clients in the area of tailings and mine waste management for closure;

  • Maintaining effective client relationships and generate consulting business;

  • Providing technical guidance and mentoring for staff in the regional team and reviewing their project work;

  • Providing senior technical input to project teams and ensuring that appropriate technical standards are developed and maintained;

  • Building and maintaining business networks;

  • Leadership of multi-disciplinary project teams on local, regional and international consulting assignments; and

  • Project management, budgeting and quality control for closure of tailings, mine waste, heap leach facilities and similar assignments.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Civil/Mining Engineering or equivalent is essential and other relevant post graduate qualification in either business or relevant technical discipline will be advantageous;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing, presentations and client liaison;

  • Previous consulting experience is an advantage with access to local industry knowledge and contacts;

  • Ability to work independently and also within multi-disciplinary project teams;

  • Demonstrable commitment and proactive approach to health and safety culture;

  • Demonstrated commitment to providing high quality service to clients within budget and time constraints; and

  • Interest in personal development and keeping abreast of world’s best practice.
